TIMELAB

timelab is a new platform in Ghent, a workplace for art, technology and society.

timelab consists of a fabLab, an artists-in-residence programme, social research and get-togethers where artists, experts and other interested parties can meet, exchange ideas and find inspiration.

Make it!

Ghent boasts Belgium’s first real public fabLab. It is part of the timelab. Anyone and everyone can come along to the Friday Open labDays to realize their very own designs. There is also scope for larger projects.

Artists-in-residence

timelab invites artists from diverse backgrounds to take part in a residential programme. For some the link with technology is all-important; others prefer to start from a contemplative standpoint about, for example, man’s role in society.

In addition to the numerous get-togethers in the fabLab and a series of training programmes, there is an annual summer camp, an intensive ten-day programme in the city for15 artists from home and abroad.

Every month there is the international network meeting Dorkbot, “people doing strange things with electricity”, where makers explain the technical aspects of their creations or research to a group of interested people.

Finally, every year in early spring the timelab OPEN assesses the state of play.

timelab is: Eva De Groote, Evi Swinnen, Kurt Stockman and Kurt Van Houtte.

THOMAS LOMMEE

Intrastructures is a pragmatic utopian design studio that generates models, tools and products for social and environmental restoration.

We translate emerging opportunities into products and services that are profitable, ecological and equitable. Building new intrastructures on existing infrastructures.

In a society where the most inspiring ideas and images, from ingenious ancient techniques to brilliant new innovations are at most some clicks away, our position as designers is shifting from being inventors towards being observers, connectors and entrepreneurs.

Through a profound observation and systematic analysis of each component within our existing infrastructure we try to get a better understanding of the invisible synergies and short circuits that have been shaping our society until this day.

From these insights we then want to synthesize, to make new connections in between those systems in order to generate a series of integrated design solutions that illustrate more sustainable perspectives on our contemporary social and environmental challenges.

SANDER VEENHOF

SNDRV is the working title of the art practice of the Amsterdam based artist Sander Veenhof (NL, 1973) who studied computer science at the VU university in Amsterdam and graduated in the direction 'instable media' on the Rietveld Art Academy in 2009. His artistic practice balances on the border between these domains, researching recent technological advancements to create projects within a cultural context, sometimes by inversing the trends of our time. Slowing down experience, making things unlogical or impractical, questioning the unconscious interpretation of technological 'improvement'.
His work focusses on new models of interaction and communication, so it's not a surprise that contemporary mobile phones are his foremost fascination. The massive growth of an instantly reachable geographical connected iPhone audience offers new borderless possibilities. The recent developments in the field of mobile Augmented Reality (the additional of a virtual layar to reality) allowed him to exhibit in in the MoMA museum in New York, create a one dimensional artwork and currently he explores new ways to open up the virtual public space for anyone to contribute to.

As an independent artist, equipped with a technical intuition and knowledge, Veenhof moves across the whole spectrum of new media (art) production, ranging from conceptual thinking to technical realization to innovative marketing inventions.

Yeri Tiete – iRAil Summer of Code

iRail started around September 2008 when Yeri Tiete ("Tuinslak") noticed there was no alternative to the NMBS/SNCB website for iPhones. The idea of iRail was to provide a simple ( KISS) interface to quickly look up departure times between two stations. iRail quickly gained popularity as it was reviewed by several big iPhone websites. Over the years iRail popularity slowly declined due to having now native iPhone applications, as well as an official NMBS/SNCB website for mobile devices and continuous updates on the NMBS/SNCB planner site, breaking iRail's data scraping.

In June 2010 however, iRail received an unexpected  cease and desist letter from the NMBS/SNCB, asking to close down iRail immediately. Yeri Tiete, being a student at that time, decided to comply and shut down iRail. However, when  Nick De Mey featured this story on MouseOver, this stirred up the public, and spawned a few question as to why the NMBS/SNCB was trying to stop a free, innovative application, as well as whether a public organisation shouldn't provide all their data in an open and free form.

Due to the huge support Tiete received, he decided to put iRail back online after carefully discussing it with  Lawyer Ywein Van den Brande as well as open sourcing the whole project.

Once open sourced, iRail quickly gained additional help from others, including Pieter Colpaert, Christophe Versieux, as well as developers in France and Germany and others.

But we've moved on since, and are now focussing on several other things:

Bart Rosseau - APPS FOR GHENT

Lieve Achten - EUROWHEELS

[EW32] is here for one purpose — To help you tell a serious story…

The plan is (first) to wrap that up for you in some ’serious play’ and (next) head your audience towards ‘meaningful life’, in an enjoyable, collaborative and effective way. This site is our appetizer and contains some of our grassroots concerning ’21st Century Literacy’ and something we tend to call ‘Collaborative Experience Design’. But ‘Serious Urban Games’ or ‘Serious Rural Tales’ fit us as well.

No Credit, Game Over! is een Serious Urban Game.

Laurent Grumiaux - FISHING CACTUS

Fishing Cactus is a privately held company located in Mons, Belgium that was established by four industry veterans in 2008.

With a core team which combines 30 years experience and 15 released titles, Fishing Cactus creates compelling and high quality games tailored towards digital distribution platforms such as iPhone, XBLA, WiiWare, PSN, DSiWare but also Kinect technologies. We create games from both original ideas as well as from existing game designs or licenses.

Fishing Cactus presents R.O.G.E.R, the first Medical Kinect Serious game

Together with the support of the Microsoft Innovation Center and a cluster of 4 therapists, we have created a prototype Serious game dedicated to patients who suffer from a lack of logic and organizational skills (typically post-stroke patients, Alzheimer, hemi-negligent patients,…)

We have been getting a lot of press and attention about this project since we are pretty much the only studio in Belgium and maybe Europe who master the technology to build this game, the reason is that we have used Kinect Technology, a controller less movement recognition camera.

This allows our game to be piloted by any generation, and especially non digital natives who have never used a game controller or keyboard and mouse (very good indeed since most patients with those symptoms fall under this category).

Dr. Jan Van Looy, IBBT-MICT-Ghent University

At the Crossroads of Art, Technology and User Psychology: Exploring the Appreciation of Interactive Digital Artworks through Experimental Research

Media experience research is a blooming field. Because of the growing investment needed for building high-quality interactive works, be they video games or other interactive experiences, the industry is looking at user research to gain insight into the needs and opportunities for engaging their audience. Experimental research, whereby different experience dimensions are measured in a (semi-) controlled setting, plays an increasingly important role. What happens when the user is confronted with a storyline? When she is given a distinct identity, including a name and an appearance? When she is presented with a challenge? When other users are present in the same environment? Etc. Etc. Understanding these variables can facilitate the successful creation of digital works. But what about the very frontier of digital production: interactive art? Can user research help artists to explore and map the experiences they evoke? And vice versa, can artists help researchers understand the ins and outs of interactive digital art appreciation. This talk will present an exploration of these issues and a call for collaboration

Marnix Bonnike - POLE IMAGES NORD PAS DE CALAIS

Marc Lavigne – GAME IN

Coming from Animation, Film and Electronic Arts, Marc Lavigne worked recently for Valenciennes Trade and Industry Chamber and the regional cluster « Pôle Images Nord – Pas de Calais » to set up facilities for the serious games industry and its development. His current position is managing director of Game IN.

GAME IN stands for Game In North, a newly established trade association representing the games industry in the North of France and Belgium. The mission is simple: to develop, promote, and support independent games developers, in-house publishers, distributors, outsourcing services, mobile, online developers, universities, and more! For the first time, a trade association is dedicated to helping cross-border games professionals, enrich and advance the business and creative environment in the region

Marie-Laure Delaby & Juan Duque - Disruptive City Labs

Disruptive Citylab is a Ghent-based collaborative platform for artistic research and intervention in the urban realm, focusing on peripheral and overlooked city areas and urban phenomenons.
Disruptive Citylab projects seek to reassign these spaces and our relationship with them by transforming their perception and meaning. Not viewing them as empty spaces but as an urban landscape of possibilities.
Through walks, mapping and interventions, we are exploring depression zones (urban voids, borders, suburbs, post-industrial areas) where creativity becomes an urban activator.
Working as a laboratory, Disruptive Citylab is open to any artist, urban designer, architect, researcher,…with curiosity for non conventional city areas.
Disruptive Citylab is an initiative of Juan Duque and Marie-Laure Delaby.

DUNCAN SPEAKMAN

My work explores how we use sound to navigate geographical, personal and political environments, creating experiences that physically and emotionally engage audiences in public spaces.

I often employ walking as both a process and/or an outcome of my work, partly because it is ‘within the speed culture of our time, a kind of resistance’ (Alys).

Many of my pieces, such as the soundwalks and live performances, are experienced on headphones while walking through public spaces. Sometimes they are pre-recorded, at other times they may use satellite positioning, live performers and realtime sound processing.
Other works include large-scale video projections, micro-documentaries and books.
Recently I have been continuing my research into sound and social spaces by developing street based games and subtlemobs.

Throughout my practice I have been trying to adopt Grierson’s definition of documentary as ‘the creative treatment of actuality’.

Myriel Milicevic – NEIGHBOURHOOD SATELLITES

Myriel is an artist, researcher and interaction designer based in Berlin. With her Neighbourhood Satellites she explores the hidden connections between people and their natural, social, and technical environments. These explorations are mostly of a participatory nature, emerging from collaborations with other artists and scientists, in the context of workshops, classrooms, exhibitions, residencies and out in the field.

Myriel received her MA from the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Italy and her diploma in Graphic Design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Further, she followed studies at the Conceptual and Information Arts department of San Francisco State University as part of her education.

Currently she works as senior designer and researcher at IxDS - Interaction Design Studios, Berlin.

Tuur Van Balen - PIGEON D'OR

Tuur Van Balen (Belgium, 1981) uses design to explore the political implications of emerging technologies. Through designing and experimenting with new interactions, he constructs thought-provoking new realities. Both the process of creating these objects, interventions and narratives as the resulting physical presence aim to confuse, question and confront different publics with the possible (and impossible) roles of technologies in our everyday lives.

Since 2008, Tuur has been working on bringing design into the world of synthetic biology and vice versa. This has led to collaborations with the Centre for Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London, the BIOS group at LSE and the Haseloff Lab at Cambridge University. He has exhibited and presented his work in various contexts, both within the UK and abroad.

Currently, he is working on a project that proposes the use of feral pigeons and synthetic biology to create aesthetic interventions in urban metabolisms. The project is in collaboration with James Chappell and funded by a design-research grant of the Flemish Agency for the Arts.

Tuur also works as a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art and a freelance designer in service and interaction design.
